How Social Media Makes Me a Better Mother
I was having a conversation with a friend a couple weeks ago and she made an offhand comment like, “Instagram makes me a terrible mother.”
(By the way, this woman is an AMAZING mother by all definitions of motherhood).
At first I wanted to blindly agree, and say, “Yeah, Instagram sucks,” but I didn’t – and I realize now it’s because I don’t really believe that.
So today I’m going to share what I know is an unpopular opinion:
Social media has made me a better mother.
Motherhood involves an existential journey in our culture, and it’s having a positive trajectory in terms of awareness of what motherhood actually entails. Social media enables women to share this experience with each other, and, if used right, can provide tools that help with parenting and inner work.
So today I will present an argument – and I think it’s a good one! – about how social media really can positively impact our experiences as mothers.
