Mini Episode: Why You Need to Build Transitions Into Your Day

I feel distracted. Everything feels rushed. There’s never enough time to get everything done.

I hear this from moms all the time. And of course, these points are valid. But are there ways we can better manage our time so it’s more structured? So we’re not moving between every section of our day feeling like the thing we transitioned out of didn’t get done well?

In today’s episode, I want to focus on two ideas: transitions and context switching. I get that some distractions are unavoidable, but I believe there are things we can do to make this better. Losing time to context switching or rushing between transitions only makes the motherload feel even heavier.

In this episode you’ll hear about:

  • Transitions – the ritual or practice you implement that moves you from one section of the day to the next (for example, “Mom mode” to “work mode”)

  • Rituals that work for me in my transitions, including closing the door to my office, turning on non-lyric music, and drinking coffee

  • Context switching – our brains “switching between tabs,” which is extremely ineffective and lowers our ability to produce high-quality thoughts

  • Bad digital hygiene, and how to reduce the amount of context switching in our day – namely, removing notifications on phones and laptops

  • How building more detail in your to-do list can cut down on recovery time when context switching happens

  • Completing a few tasks till the end vs. only getting halfway done a number of things, and why the latter creates more stress
